POSTED ON

How many times have you found yourself looking at the clock during the workday and realized that you haven’t moved very far from your screen?  While it’s often tempting to just stay put and “power through” your to-do list, there are significant productivity - and not to mention health - benefits of getting up and going for a stroll. Not sold yet? Keep reading.  Boost your mood According to Prevention, research finds that “regular walking actually modifies your nervous system so much that you’ll experience a decrease in anger and hostility.” In fact, Robert Thayer, Ph.D, author of Calm Energy: How People Regulate Mood with Food & Exercise says that just ten minutes of walking at a fast pace (imagine you’re late to an appointment) can boost your mood for two hours.  Summon creativity Walking is also beneficial if you’re feeling stuck on a project or assignment. You’ve probably heard of people who have sparks of creativity when they’re away from their desk. Well, there’s a reason for that! Research shows that walkers demonstrated more creative thinking than sitters. Keep that sweet tooth in check Harvard Medical School explains that studies show that walking can help lessen cravings for chocolate (or other sweet snacks) or may even limit the amount of chocolate you consume in a stressful situation. (No judgement, I stress eat chips.)  Strengthen your immune system We don’t recommend skipping your flu shot, but keep in mind that walking can help protect you during the cold and flu season. According to this article, “A study of 1,000 men and women found that those who walked at least twenty minutes a day, at least five days a week, had 43% fewer sick days than those who exercised once a week or less. And if they did get sick, it was for a shorter duration, and their symptoms were milder.”  What hacks do you swear by to increase your productivity and boost well-being?
