Why Good Design Matters for Employee Communications

It’s not a secret that design has become a strategic weapon for external communications. Whether it’s an easy-to-use website or an engaging ad campaign, companies of all sizes understand that design can differentiate and create loyal customers. When it comes to employee communications, fewer examples of stand-out design tend to surface. This may be because this type of communication is meant to stay inside the four walls of a company. But what if you designed communications for your employees that were as compelling as your external marketing? What if your internal communications efforts were so beautifully designed that they were worth sharing externally? A few companies have been doing exactly this, and in the process are inspiring loyalty with employees and creating headlines at the same time. Take the UK’s Channel 4 and their beautiful infographic designed by Jack Hudson used to welcome new employees. The illustration takes what could easily have been a dull Word document and instead offers Channel 4 staff a visual way to understand how the company works. Hudson took a similar approach to illustrating Channel 4’s Product Management process, which he describes as acting “…as a metaphor; the product team functions like a cog within a bigger mechanism, in order for the team to work successfully they need a collaborative input from all surrounding departments.” Valve is a company known for innovation and great design for the video games it creates. It does this by giving their employees bucket loads of creative freedom. This value is carried through to their internal communications with this beautifully designed Valve Handbook for New Employees. The handbook includes charismatic diagrams, a gorgeous timeline of the company’s history, and illustrations that showcase the company’s playful culture and beliefs. The visuals complement cleverly written copy that actually makes the employee handbook a fun read.
